The workshop is “comfortable,” almost intimate. A powerful scent of wood essences greets visitors. It is in this space, where guitars, lutes, and other banjos are carefully stored awaiting intervention, that Lucas Farenc works. A thick beard masks his 23 years, and a perpetual bright gaze lights up his face. Lucas Farenc is known as a happy craftsman. It must be said that his passion for the guitar captured him at an early age. At the age of 5, he attended the music school in Alès. A solid training that allowed him, at just 15, to pass the entrance exam for the luthiers’ school in Bédarieux. “We were one hundred and fifty candidates and there were only fifteen places,” he recalls. His determination, his taste for precise gestures, and his musical level did the rest.
A craftsman diploma in hand
A surprising professional orientation for this rather gifted high school student, which, apart from his passion for music, can be explained by a simple anecdote: “When I was a child, my brother broke my guitar. I fixed it with my father. That’s when the profession revealed itself to me.”

Throughout his training, during his internships in companies in Bordeaux, Marseille, or Nîmes, Lucas Farenc met “luthiers who all encouraged me to pursue this path.” After obtaining his craftsman diploma, he returned to Alès to set up his business.
120 hours of work for a guitar
He can repair, maintain, or restore any type of string instrument: “It’s suitable for the historical instrument with the sentimental guitar that belonged to the grandfather,” summarizes the luthier. He is also capable of building a fully customized instrument: “I offer different woods depending on the desired sound, but I also take measurements of the musician’s hand and arm.”

It takes him less than 120 hours of work to build an acoustic guitar and 70 hours for an electric guitar; prices start at €2400 for the former and €1600 for the latter. “My production travels all over France. I just delivered a guitar to Metz and I’m currently building another one that will go to Poitiers,” explains the instrument maker.
