Activate location

You just received your brand new iPhone. Hooray! You turn it on and start setting up your device. After choosing the language and country, you will be asked to enter an Apple ID. If you already have one, enter it. Otherwise, choose to create one with your email address. Then, you will be asked “Activate location,” choose “yes.” Your iPhone is now locatable.

Your iPhone is lost

I can’t find that darn iPhone. Don’t panic. Grab your computer and open your web browser. In the URL bar, type www.icloud.com. You need to log in with your Apple ID (the one you created the day your iPhone was set up). Once logged in, click on the “Find My” app (it looks like a green radar). Then, you will see a map where your iPhone will appear. A “Make iPhone ring” button can help you locate it if it is nearby. Otherwise, choose the “Lost Mode” option.

Repeat the login steps on www.icloud.com described above. You will then see additional options displayed. If you are sure your iPhone has been stolen, you can remotely lock it by clicking on “Lost Mode.” You will then be prompted to enter a message or a phone number so that the person who finds your phone (the police, for example) can contact you. This method also works in case your phone is lost.

You can perform these steps via a tablet (Apple or not), or any other mobile phone with an Internet connection and a browser. These steps will be even easier if you have another Apple device. For example, if you have an iPad, you just need to download the “Find My” app (if it hasn’t already been downloaded) and repeat the steps described in the previous two paragraphs.

Additional tip

As we know, many will want to erase the data on their iPhone so that the thief cannot access it. However, we do not recommend choosing the “Erase iPhone” option. Why? Because if your iPhone is just lost, you will be happy to find it and unlock it with your iCloud password without all data erased. Moreover, if you erase the data on the phone, you make the phone usable and configurable again. The thief can use it. Choosing the “Lost Mode” option ensures that the phone is locked (even if the thief is a computer whiz).

You are prepared in case of loss or theft of your iPhone. You know how to locate it, lock it, and call it from a computer or tablet, Apple or not. Remember to create an Apple ID in advance if you don’t already have one. It’s also very important not to forget if you lose your iPhone: activate the location of your iPhone from your phone’s settings (Settings/Your name/iCloud) or when it is set up. Otherwise, your iPhone will not be locatable or lockable.
